Other Seabirds

The seabirds below can be found around Kauaʻi and its offshore islets. Many of them nest along the shores of Kauaʻi (particularly at Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge) and/or within the two seabird sanctuaries of Lehua Islet and Mokuʻaeʻae Rock Islet. Some, like the Black-footed Albatross, Laysan Albatross, and Wedge-tailed Shearwater, are only seen during the breeding season and otherwise range far over the open ocean. Others, like the booby and tropicbird species, forage closer to shore in the non-breeding season and can be seen year-round. As part of our work on Lehua and Mokuʻaeʻae, KESRP conducts systematic monitoring of nesting Black-footed Albatross, Laysan Albatross, Wedge-tailed Shearwaters, Bulwer’s Petrels, and Red-tailed Tropicbirds.
